We often get asked if Wood or ceramic is suitable for kitchen worktops. In some low cost local developments in Nairobi, we even see work surfaces fitted with tiled individual ceramic pieces.
Granite is the norm in Europe and America primarily due to its long lasting properties, and heat resistance.
Granite Vs Wood
Wooden worktops are less common than Granite, because they have obvious drawbacks and limitations. Wood is also not an inexpensive material and for that reason does not practically lend itself to kitchen worksurfaces.
- Granite is much more heat resistant.
- Kitchen are wet areas, and for that reason Granite is more suitable as it will not deform or warp when damp. The material is also much less porous than wood, and you can wipe of any excess spillages when they occur.
- Wooden work-surfaces will not last long in homes & easily mark and scratch. Granite on the other hand will outlast the kitchen
Granite Vs Ceramic
Many low cost developments in Kenya use ceramic work-surfaces as opposed to Granite, primarily to save costs. With a competitive housing market we strongly recommend against this. Home buyers have much more choice than they used to and expect more for their money. For this reason it is imperative to stand out from the crowd and offer practical finishes.
- Ceramic is a soft man made product and will not withstand any accidental force applied. So cooking utensils such as pots and pans can easily crack of break the surface
- Having hundreds of joints on a work top is unhygienic as bacteria can form in the joints.
- Aesthetically ceramic is not as appealing as Granite. This can often lower property prices and perceptions of quality.
